Entrapment

This self-portrait encapsulates the dichotomy between liberation and entrapment engendered by the freedom of ballet movement in contrast to the ballet beauty standards.  While ballet is a way for me to express my "emotions through motion," a gift represented by the fairy wings, the cycle of adversities in physical and mental pain that come with ballet also entrap me. However, the gleaming green light in the distance offers a sense of hope: a hope to allow myself to separate the beauty of ballet expression from the harsh standards imposed on ballerinas.I manipulated the lighting with purple and green LED lights and drew myself from the two superimposed photographs. I rendered starting with the figure to the background, blending to fade the objects in the distance to the green light.
